Tips for Artists who are Young or Young at Heart from Laurie Barrows!

Draw! Draw! Draw! Draw from life. Draw from your imagination.

Take the time to learn the basics of drawing to develop your skills. All forms of art in all media are based on good drawing skills. It takes time, dedication, and hard work to develop talent. I still have days I struggle with a drawing, but I always learn from it.

Rules were meant to be broken or pushed. You need to know the basic concepts (rules of art). Then, you can be selective about when and where to apply them.

Frustration will occur. Accept this and work through it. Don't give up, keep on trying. Struggling through the "hard" parts leads to improvements in mastering drawing. Learning to draw can be just a tough as learning math (but more fun, I think). You will get better if you just keep on trying.

You will make mistakes. Don't get too upset. It is only a piece of paper. You may not see it when you do make mistakes, but you are learning from them. By recognizing a mistake, you are opening the door to learning from it. Think how great you will feel when you finally get it!

The best advice I ever got I still use today. My seventh grade art teacher (thank you, Mrs. Serverson!) said, "Keep a sketchbook. Draw everyday." I have kept a sketchbook faithfully since then. I do draw daily. Draw anything, anytime, anywhere.

Explore! Experiment! Never stop learning. Try a new media now and then. Try drawing something you wouldn't normally draw. Take a boring subject and make an interesting drawing of it.

Don't throw out sketchbooks or drawings. Keep them in chronological order. When you look back at them, you will see improvement.

Respect yourself, your efforts, and your art. Don't let anyone discourage you or put down your artwork. Be true to yourself and your art. Follow your artistic instincts.

Have fun! Enjoy drawing!
